Plug-in and balcony solar in the UK: what changes on 27 August 2026
Plug-in solar — a small solar panel you plug straight into an ordinary socket — becomes legal in Great Britain on 27 August 2026, under a new regulation (SI 2026/848) that is already law. It’s a real option if you rent or live in a flat and have no roof of your own — but the rules are narrow and the saving is modest. Here’s the real picture, with nothing sold.

- What plug-in solar actually is. One or two solar panels with a small built-in inverter that plugs
into a normal three-pin socket, so the electricity they make flows into your home’s wiring and your
appliances use it first. No roof, no scaffolding, no export meter — you just plug it in. It’s often
called balcony solar, because it’s huge on the Continent for flats with a balcony rail.
- The legal change on 27 August 2026. Until now, plugging a generator into a socket sat outside UK
wiring rules. The regulation is already made — signed into law on 16 July 2026 — and
takes effect on 27 August 2026. SI 2026/848 creates a legal category, a “plug-in
microgenerator”, and makes the government’s Interim Product Specification (IPS v2) a legal
requirement for it. In plain terms: a compliant, manufacturer-supplied plug-in solar kit becomes legal to plug
in and use in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) from that date.
- The limits are narrow — read them before you buy. The exception is deliberately tight: the
kit must be solar-only (batteries are not included), have a maximum output of 800 watts, use
an approved plug with an inverter carrying the right grid (G98) evidence, and meet the IPS v2 specification. A
separate long-standing grid rule allows one such device per home. So it’s one small panel-set, not a
wall of them — and a battery you plug in is a different thing entirely, not covered by this change.

- Where the UK is heading — the German story. This isn’t a leap in the dark. Germany
raised its plug-in limit to the same 800 watts and cut the paperwork — you just register the kit
online, no electrician needed. Take-up then took off: more than 1.3 million balcony-solar systems are now
registered on Germany’s federal registry, the Marktstammdatenregister, having passed a million in mid-2025
— and the real number in use is thought to be higher still. It’s become a normal thing for renters

- The saving is modest, and only on power you use as it’s made. An 800W kit only saves you
money on the electricity you use at the moment it’s generated — there’s no easy way to
sell the surplus back on a plug-in setup. A well-sited (south-facing, unshaded) kit might generate roughly
600–700 kWh a year; a vertical balcony mount, far less. Realistically that’s a saving of around
£65 to £117 a year off your electricity at the current price-cap rate (about
26p a unit) — genuine, but a modest offset, not a replacement for a full solar roof.

- Who it suits — and the pitfalls. It suits renters, flats and homes with no suitable roof, and
anyone home in the daytime (or with a steady always-on load like a fridge and router) so more of the generation
gets used. The pitfalls: buy only a compliant, manufacturer-supplied kit made for the UK, not a grey import; a
south-facing, unshaded spot matters enormously; and if nobody’s home at midday, much of the free power is
simply wasted. Treat it as a small, satisfying win — not a magic bill-killer.
