About

Why we built Joulely

We’re a small team of quants. We normally spend our days modelling financial products, building forecasting systems and wrestling with big, multi-dimensional optimisation problems. We got fed up with a corner of the energy industry — and figured the same techniques we point at portfolios might help ordinary people get a fairer deal on their own bills.

  • What we’re actually doing. Taking the methods we’d normally aim at markets — optimisation, forecasting, working from real data rather than averages — and turning them on your home. The question we care about: are you paying more than you need to, and what would genuinely change that?
  • What it costs, and why. An account is free. Connecting your smart meter costs from £1.50 a month — £1.50 for one meter, £2.50 for gas and electricity, because the national network charges us for that data one meter at a time — and you won’t be charged again after the month you disconnect. We take £0 commission on any switch, ever: no affiliate links, no referral fees, no pay-for-placement. Joulely earns exactly the same whichever supplier you pick.
  • How we measure the site. We study how the site gets used — anonymised, first-party only, no third-party trackers — purely to make the journey easier and more useful. Nothing about you is sold.
  • No favourites. We don’t pick winners for anyone’s benefit but yours. The ranking follows your numbers, not our revenue.

That’s the whole idea: serious modelling, pointed at your home, paid for by you rather than by a supplier. If it saves you money, tell a friend — that’s how we’d like to grow.

What we publish

We hold no security certifications, so instead we publish what we actually do and what we do not.

  • How your data is protected — encryption, hosting, backups and deletion, ending with a numbered list of the controls we do not have.
  • Everyone who touches your data — every third party, named, with what it sees, down to the one script your browser loads on every page.
  • What we commit to — and which figures are settled in a partner agreement rather than published, and why.

If you are at an energy company and want the contractual versions, they are in the trust pack or at business@joulely.co.uk.
