Could you be in the wrong council tax band?

Council tax bands were set in 1991, often in a rush — and a lot of homes were put in the wrong one. If yours is too high, you could be owed a refund and a lower bill going forward.

  • Why it happens. 1991 valuations were quick and broad-brush. Identical neighbouring homes sometimes ended up in different bands — a clue something’s off.
  • The neighbour check. If similar properties on your street are in a lower band than you, that’s worth investigating. Bands are public — you can look them up.
  • The honest catch. A challenge can move your band down (refund + lower bill) but in rare cases up — so check the evidence first. We’ll always flag that plainly.
