The tip jar

Buy someone else a place

A connected place costs real money to run, and every tip on this page pays for one — for a household that isn’t you. Nothing here is locked behind it, and this is the only place we ask.

Every tip pays for someone else’s connected place. A connected home’s smart meter costs us the regulated DCC data — charged per meter, gas and electricity separately — plus the servers and the models that turn half-hourly readings into something readable. A connected place costs a household from £1.50 a month while its meter is connected (£1.50 for one meter, £2.50 for gas and electricity). So these aren’t tiers: £2.50 buys another household one full month of a connected gas-and-electricity place, and £30 buys another household a whole year of a connected gas-and-electricity place, or 20 months of a single-meter one.

Card payment handled by Stripe — we never see your card details. It’s a one-off; there is nothing to cancel and no subscription.

  • It goes to another household, not to you. No badge you can’t otherwise get, no feature, no queue-jump. It buys someone else a place — that’s the whole point of it.
  • It doesn’t buy us either. No supplier pays us anything — we take £0 commission on any switch — and a tip doesn’t change what the numbers say either.
  • One-off, not a subscription. Nothing recurring, nothing to cancel.
